Kindergarten-2nd Grade:
Kindergarten through 2nd Grade will learn some
basics about keyboarding including:
- Proper technique
- The use of two hands for typing
- Using the thumb for the Space Bar
- Hand placement on the home row (2nd Grade)
- Keys in the home row
In most cases the hands of Kindergarteners
through 2nd Graders are still too small to be able to
reach all of the keys properly with the proper fingers therefore the emphasis
will be on posture, finding the proper home row position and using the correct
hand when typing.
Kindergarten will spend a little time keyboarding
using the site Key
Seeker which emphasizes the proper hand to use for each
letter. Kindergarten will also use the program Bailey's
Book House this month.
1st Grade will spend some time keyboarding using the
site Key
Seeker (which emphasizes the proper hand to use for each
letter) and Typing
with Katie. They will also use the program Jumpstart First
Grade this month.
2nd Grade will spend time keyboarding using the site
Key
Seeker (which emphasizes the proper hand to use for each side
of the keyboard) and Typing
with Burton. 2nd Grade will get their first exposure to Microsoft Word being shown how to
open and save a document, and change a font style, size and color. To practice their keyboarding and word
processing skills, 2nd Grade will type their spelling lists each week.
In addition, 2nd Grade will also use the program Jumpstart Second
Grade.
3rd Grade-5th Grade:
3rd Grade will use the program Adventures in
Typing to learn & improve their keyboarding technique. 3rd Grade
will be measured on accuracy rather than speed and the goal for the
year is to have be comfortable with all of the keys on the homerow
including G, H and the quote keys. In Microsoft Word, they will
review what was introduced in 2nd Grade and they will be introduced to
Word Art, how to align text, how to insert clip-art and how to use spell-check. 3rd Grade will type
their spelling lists each week to practice keyboarding and word
processing.
4th Grade will use the program Adventures in
Typing to learn & improve their keyboarding technique. 4th
Grade's speed and accuracy goal is a speed of at least 15 words per
minute with an accuracy of at least 90%. 4th Grade is expected to have
all of the keys on the homerow memorized and be familiar with the
other letter keys on the keyboard. In Microsoft
Word, they will review what was introduced in 2nd and 3rd Grades. 4th Grade
will type their spelling lists each week to practice keyboarding and
word processing.
5th Grade will use the lessons in the program Mavis
Beacon or the program Adventure in Typing to improve their keyboarding technique. 5th
Grade's speed and accuracy goal is a speed of at least 20 words per
minute with an accuracy of at least 90%. By the end of the year, 5th
Grade is expected to have all of the letter keys on the keyboard
memorized. In Microsoft
Word, they will review what was introduced in all previous grades
and they will be introduced to various kinds of lists and how to use the thesaurus. 5th Grade will type their spelling
lists each week to practice keyboarding and word processing.
Middle School:
6th Grade will use the lessons in the program Mavis
Beacon to improve their keyboarding technique. 6th Grade is
expected to achieve a speed of at least 25 words per minute with an
accuracy of at least 90%. 6th Grade is expected to have all of the
letter keys on the keyboard memorized. In Microsoft Word, they will review
what was introduced in all previous grades and they will work on
various projects to enhance and remember these skills and be
introduced to the drawing tool.
7th Grade will use the lessons in the program Mavis
Beacon to improve their keyboarding technique if needed. 7th Grade
is expected to achieve a speed of at least 35 words per minute with an
accuracy of at least 90%. 7th Grade is expected to have all of the
letters and punctuation on the keyboard memorized. In Microsoft Word, they will review
what was introduced in all previous grades and they will be introduced
to the drawing tool.
8th Grade will use the lessons in the program Mavis
Beacon to improve their keyboarding technique if needed. 8th Grade
is expected to achieve a speed of at least 45 words per minute with an
accuracy of at least 90%. 8th Grade should have the entire keyboard
memorized. In Microsoft Word, they will review
what was introduced in all previous grades and they will be introduced
to the drawing tool. 8th Grade will also work on providing
information needed for their class
pages in the yearbook.
5th Grade and Middle School will go on a Halloween
Scavenger Hunt at the end of the month.
